Writing Thank You Letters

Writing a thank you letter after an interview is very important.  It can be the key to getting a job offer.  Some employers think very highly of candidates who promptly follow-up their interview with a thank you letter.

When writing a thank you letter it is important to highlight why you are a strong contender for this position.  Your thank you letter also gives you the opportunity to emphazise your application and show that you appreciate the time given to you for the interview.

Try planning to send your letter within 24 hours after your interview.  If you are short on time, you can send an email thank you letter.

Email Thank You Letters

In most cases, it is appropriate to send thank you letters by email.  If the employer is making a quick decision, a thank you letter sent by email is more appropriate.

Write your email thank you letter as you would a proper letter.  Reinforce the fact that you want the position.  If you have any concerns or issues address them in your email.  Reaffirm why you want the job, what your qualifications are, why you would be an assett to the company and so on.

Use this opportunity to discuss anything important that was not brought up during the interview or did not answer as well as you would have hoped.  The thank you note should be brief and to the point.  A couple of short paragraphs is enough.

Group Thank Yous

If you were interviewed by several people, send a letter to each individual interviewer.  Adjust your message so that each person gets a unique thank you letter.  At the end of each interview, ask for a business card.  This way you will have the contact details for your thank you letters.
