Opening Paragraph

The purpose of this letter is to introduce yourself and explain why you are writing.  If you are responding to a job advertisement, include the job title and the reference number if any.  If you are just investigating to see if there is any possibility for employment, introduce yourself and advise the employer of your existing career situation as briefly as possible.

Paragraphs 2, 3, 4/5

The purpose of the following paragraphs is to tell the employer why you want to work for them and why they should employ you.

In just a few words, cover your completed or current course, the proposed finishing date, your major, area of expertise or special interest and any other excellent academic results.

Emphasise the skills, knowledge, qualities and employment experience you have gained and included in your resume.  These should be the most relevant to the position you are applying for.  Demonstrate how you meet the selection criteria and how your knowledge and experience is linked to the employer’s current and future needs.

Include other aspects that show you possess vital skills (e.g. communication, teamwork, initiative etc.) gained through different experiences whether it be volunteer work, community activities etc.

Demonstrate that you have done your research on the company and the position.  Show your enthusiasm for the position and the employer by including information from your research without copying sentences from the employer’s website.

Final Paragraph

The purpose of this paragraph is to let the employer know what you want to happen next.

Confirm that you have included your resume and any other documents requested by the employer.  Finish in a positive tone, thank the employer for their time and express your interest in attending an interview.
